Green Logistics at home: as in the big system, so too in the small family

Michael Vogel has been part of the Galliker team for almost 17 years. As head of the workshop at Galliker Car Centers, he deals with the development of mobility and the use of renewable energies on a daily basis. A few years ago, his employer's commitment inspired him to think about investing in sustainable energy generation in his private life as well. A good two years ago, he decided to install a PV system in his own home and shortly afterwards upgraded it with a battery storage system. He is filled with pride when he talks about the system - a glance at his home in Altishofen illustrates his enthusiasm, which only grows as the benefits increase.

Green Logistics by Galliker: For almost four years now, this has been the sustainability strategy of Galliker, which aims to make the company CO2-neutral by 2050. But even in the years before the launch of the Green Logistics strategy, the development of mobility and the increasing importance of sustainable energy supply played a major role in the family-owned company's mission statement. "The presence of sustainability and, in particular, solar energy throughout the company meant that I was also increasingly concerned with this. Five years ago, we bought a detached house in Altishofen - it was clear to me from the outset that I would take the step sooner or later and invest in my own energy sources," recalls Michael Vogel. The final decision to install his own photovoltaic system on the roof of the house was ultimately made not least because of the financial aspect: "Of course you want to do something good for the environment, that's the main priority. And yet such a project is only possible if it is also financially feasible. I was surprised myself when I looked into it more intensively and realized that such an investment would even be worthwhile, given that a modern PV system should last for around 30 years."

However, the Vogel family did not commission their own PV system with 47 panels and an output of 19.27 KWp in March 2023 without optimization plans. When the system was installed, the option of installing a battery storage system at a later date was included - for good reason, as it turned out after a few months. While more than enough electricity was produced by the solar system during the day in good weather, production dropped to little or zero output in bad weather and at night. The result was a constant stress to do the energy-intensive things in the household as soon as the sun was there - everyday life was partly based on optimal solar radiation. If these times could not be used optimally, the electricity produced was fed into the grid cheaply, while at other times electricity had to be purchased from the grid at a higher price. The battery storage system provided a remedy in December 2023: with a storage capacity of 9.2 kW, it ensures sufficient electricity, even in phases with less solar radiation. Provided there is no snow on the PV panels, no more electricity needs to be purchased - except when the electric car needs to be fully charged.

"I myself am impressed by the autonomy that this combination of PV system and battery storage gives you. As you can see from the illustrations of electricity production/purchase and use, it's the storage system that ultimately makes the big difference for us. Seeing this optimization in figures is a pleasure and gives you a good feeling that you have not only made a good investment financially, but that you are also doing something effective and sustainable for the environment." - Michael Vogel

Appreciation of the green commitment of employees at Galliker

The commitment of Michael Vogel and his family is well known in the Galliker world - CEO Peter Galliker is delighted with the commitment, which fits in perfectly with the transport company's green logistics strategy: "Developing ways of generating energy and making optimum use of existing resources is something we deal with every day. It is all the more pleasing to see that our colleagues are following this path honestly and authentically - a symbol of achieving great things together, at every level."

Imbach puts high-performance photovoltaic system into operation

In a further step towards a sustainable energy supply, Imbach Logistik AG was able to commission a state-of-the-art photovoltaic system at the Imbach headquarters in Schachen at the beginning of October. The new system has an impressive output of 1,156 kWp and produces around 1,204 MWh of electricity per year. This provides enough energy to supply around 256 households for a year.
